For the past three years Medina County has been the recipient of grants from the Ohio Tobacco Prevention Foundation, with the Board of County Commissioners serving as fiscal agent.

This money was made available from the Master Settlement Agreement between the Tobacco Industry and 46 states.

By the end of 2007 we will have received $821,517.

Cessation

“It’s easy to quit smoking.  I’ve done it hundreds of times”     -Mark Twain

Overview:

Some individuals simply are able to stop smoking.  For others, studies have shown that pharmacological treatment combined with behavioral treatment, including psychological support and skills training to overcome high-risk situations, results in some of the highest long-term abstinence rates.  Generally, rates of relapse for smoking cessation are highest in the first few weeks and months and diminish considerably after about 3 months.

Some startling facts include the following:

• Annually, nearly 19,000 Ohioans, or 52 per day, die from tobacco-related illnesses and disease, source CDC, state specific facts (Ohio)

• Adults, children, and babies who die each year from others smoking (secondhand smoke and smoking while pregnant): 1,770-3,150, source CDC, state specific facts (Ohio)

• The smoking rate for pregnant mothers in Ohio is 18.8%-the 6th worst rate in the nation, source National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), CDC.  (2001, August 28)

Although effective treatments exist most smokers who want to quit are not taking advantage of what’s offered.  However, there is hope (one being this very website!).

Call the Ohio Quit Line (1 800 784-8669) or our local number (330 721-5057) for free counseling and let’s Celebrate Healthy Horizons in Medina County.
